The Donner Party Phenomenon

Back in the early days of the West, a group of California bound settlers were heading West, late in the season. The standard trail was clear to see, but concern about the weather caused the leader to induce the party to take an impulsive shortcut through Donner pass. This disastrous mistake cost the lives of many and the dignity of more. There was cannibalism and indescribable suffering and hunger.

And so, this page attempts to point out the dangers of attempting to take shortcuts, when you find yourself behind schedule on the agenda of life.

We have elsewhere emphasized that survival of Central Pain requires LOWERED EXPECTATIONS, not a desperate struggle to match what you were, which expends limited resources.

Every CP patient, once the severity of the disease is realized, begins to wonder about loved ones. How do we prevent our disease from landing on others.

In theory this seems impossible. We can discipline ourselves never to be short tempered, to pay more attention, to listen to whatever they want to talk about and be supportive and loving where we have the opportunity. But, really, how can a person carry this off.
