The prostaglandins are one of the acid related chemicals in injured nerves. Their role in nerve injury in acute situations such as stroke is leading to better understanding of nerve injury in general. (The current dilemma in treating stroke is that COX(2) inhibitors block prostaglandin neurotoxicity but lead to adverse cardiovascular effects.)

The link is not one to one, but there has to be significance to the immune response in central pain nerve injury. That we are not certain what sets off the inflammatory process, and whether it precedes or follows pain, does not change the fact it is there. Inflammation means acid around the neuron and acid means pain. The brain itself inherently feels no sensation, although the dura around it is susceptible to pain, but the same chemicals in a joint would cause severe joint pain. CP may be the expression of the inflammation.

Because we have previously published an article on SNSRs but there has been little follow up in the world’s research literature, it seemed worthwhile to revisit a segment on this topic. Any compound shown to be as potent as NMDA should certainly remain in conversation.
